Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands, it is believed to be the site of Homer's Palace of Odysseus.
It's uniqueness and natural beauty are breathtaking conjuring up images of deep blue seas and majestic mountains.
Kefalonia is also known for it's dramatic beaches, spectacular panoramic views, lofty fir forests, picturesque villages, towering white cliffs, wild horses known to be found only in Kefalonia and Saint Gerasimos, the islands paiton saint.
His relics remain uncorrupt and are kept their for the sanctification of the faithful.
Kefalonia covers an area of 781 kilometers and has a coastline of 254 km.
It's weather is mild meditteranean, which makes it a wonderful vacation spot all year long.
The capital of the island is the town of Argostoli with the population of 7,600 people.
I am from the south-east side (Ellios) of the island. The name of my village is Atsoupades, which I consider the most beautiful part of Kefalonia. My father Nikolaos Hionis produces Kefalonian Honey and it is the best in the world due to the black fir pine trees found in the nearby mountain of Ainos, unique and also found only in Kefalonia.
Saint Gerasimos was from the Peloponnesus, the son of Demetrius and Kale, of the family of Notaras. He was reared in piety by them and studied the Sacred writtings. He left his country and went throughout various lands, and finally came to Kefalonia, where he restored a certain old church and built a convent around it, where it stands to this day at the place called Omala. He finished the course of his life there in asceticism in the year 1570. His sacred relics, which remain incorrupt, are kept there for the sanctification of the faithful. See pictures in my album.
